A world characterised by globalisation, rapid technological changes and new and more flexible business models is witnessing the emergence of networks of organisations and new challenges in the area of supply chain management. Sourcing is becoming increasingly important in this context. In the current market, the competency to develop and maintain a network of best-in-class suppliers is a precondition for strategic success.
Each company has to consider three fundamental sourcing questions:
- Which activities do we carry out in-house, and which activities do we subcontract? This is the classic “make or buy” decision and sourcing strategy.
- How do we structure, manage and organise relationships with business relations? This involves the design of the sourcing model, the management of a network organisation, and supply chain management.
- What demands does working in a network of sourcing partners make of the competencies and conduct of managers and staff?
Both core activities, such as production and logistics, and supporting activities, such as HR and ICT, are increasingly bought from within or outside one’s own organisation or from external service providers (both in the Netherlands, near-shore and off-shore). Taking considered sourcing decisions and creating the necessary direction function are of strategic importance, and demand special attention from senior managers.
